Why India
Why UK Companies Hire in India
Four reasons this route works better than most alternatives, and three honest caveats nobody selling it will volunteer.
-
60–70% lower cost
A AI / ML engineer costs you around £1,899 a month through us against roughly £5,798 in the UK.
-
4.5–5.5 hours ahead
A normal Indian working day already overlaps most of a UK one. No night shifts, no shift premium.
-
English is the working language
India has one of the largest English-speaking populations in the world, and English is the medium of instruction across its professional education.
The case
What actually makes this work
-
The talent pool is genuinely deep
India graduates millions of students a year, a large share in engineering, technology and commerce. In technology and finance especially, the constraint on your hire is your brief, not the supply of candidates.
-
Three decades of working with the West
India has been delivering services to UK and US businesses since the 1990s. Working Western hours, to Western standards, with Western tooling is normal there — not an adjustment you have to fund.
-
The time difference works for you, not against
An advisor starting at 9am India time has cleared your overnight queue before your UK team logs on. Compare that with the Philippines or Latin America, where somebody is working nights.
-
The salary gap is not a quality gap
It reflects local cost of living, not local capability. The person you hire is often earning well above the local market rate for the same job — which is exactly why they stay.
The caveats
Every page on the internet selling this route lists the upside. Here is the rest of it, because you will meet these anyway and it is better to plan for them.
Onboarding costs you real time
Not money — attention. Expect to spend meaningful hours in the first fortnight recording how you do things. The businesses that skip this are the ones who conclude six weeks later that it did not work. Screen recordings beat calls, because they can be rewatched without asking you again.
Feedback needs to be explicit at first
Many Indian workplaces are more formally hierarchical than a UK small business, so a new hire may be reluctant to push back, say a task is unclear, or tell you they disagree. That is a reasonable read of what most employers want, and it fades quickly once they learn it is not what you want — but you have to say so, in week one, and respond well the first time they do it.
Infrastructure varies
Power and internet reliability differ significantly across Indian cities. We screen for a proper home setup and a backup arrangement, and it is worth asking about at interview rather than discovering it during your first busy week.
And one that is not a caveat
People will tell you the writing needs editing. For marketing and content roles, that is true for about a month — spelling and date conventions are a quick style-guide fix, tone takes a few weeks of feedback. After that, most clients stop rewriting. It is a settling-in cost, not a ceiling.
Where the gap is biggest
The roles with the largest monthly saving
Savings are against the fully loaded cost of the same hire in the UK — salary plus employer National Insurance plus the auto-enrolment pension minimum.
